A friend's mother loved this bentwood rocking chair. When she passed away, it fell into disrepair in his garage/hoarder's lair...the cane seat and back partially broke out and it soon wore a blanket of dust.
I happily adopted the rocker, made a new seat, painted it my favorite color, then created a padded seatback from a Chinese jacket I acquired (of course) at Goodwill. For the seat and the back of the back, I elaborated on a small feather-like motif found in the jacket's design. I used rickrack, buttons, and cotton fabric in bright primary colors (plus green) to create three distinctive arched areas of vivid color and pattern.
My friend didn't like that the seat was covered with buttons and therefore too delicate to sit on. To stop an argument, I simply flipped over the cushion to show him the plain red reverse. He was satisfied.
