When I enter the sanctity of a thrift shop, my first stop is the furniture section. On one such pilgrimage, I noticed this dainty, primitive wooden chair looking sad and lost among the mysteriously-stained sofas and banged-up entertainment centers. It reminded me of a stray puppy...I could never walk away from either. So I brought it home and contemplated it for a while...then I knew what to do.
My friend in Orange County has trouble parting with things, but one summer when my daughter and I offered to help her eliminate the mass of random junk heaped 4-feet deep over the entire surface of her back patio, she agreed. Our compensation? If there was something she was getting rid of that we liked, we could have it. Deal, said she.
Buried in the pile I found 4 hand-made/hand-painted papier mache napkin rings from Mexico, which now top this little chair. I knew I needed a funky, bright seat cushion to complement the napkin rings' colors, so I made a patchwork using strips and swatches of my favorite Guatemalan fabrics.
