Another beautiful antique chair left at Goodwill, in need of an appreciative home. I call this The Bird Chair. It sits by the front door where everyone coming in and going out can admire it.
My younger daughter and I were at the grocery store late one evening when just the skeleton crew was working. We were passing the floral department with our basket of food when a little box full of hand-painted, feather-covered styrofoam birds caught my eye. It had no price on it and there were no comparable items on display. I assumed the birds were something the floral department would use to spiff up flower arrangements and that these shouldn't have been out as if for sale...
Nevertheless, I took it to the register with our groceries and asked the price. The young man lazily checked the box to be sure we hadn't missed the sticker. Next he looked around half-heartedly for a coworker or manager to consult, Seeing no one but a few other late-night shoppers, he said, "What do you think it's worth?" I did some quick mental math and suggested $8. He said okay and the birds were mine.
As for the seat cushion, many years ago my mom gave me a little purse made of hand-woven cloth from I-Don't-Know-Where. I filleted it so there'd be enough fabric to make a seat cover, then shaped it and hand-embroidered it onto sturdy red cotton. The rest of the designs on the chair are made from colored pieces of glass and an assortment of fancy beads.
