Like my yellow Civil War chair, this one is probably actually slightly post-Civil War, but still from the 19th Century. My mom had several of these chairs; I grew up loving them. I had one at my desk throughout my childhood. When I come across one at Goodwill, I buy it because I want it to be loved and appreciated. And because it reminds me of my mother...
For the seat (which had been cane but which was broken and had to be replaced with sturdy plywood stained to match the chair itself), I made a cushion by combining hot pink cotton rodeo cloth, cherry-picked pieces of Guatemalan textiles, denim, a cut-up belt, colorful hand embroidery, reverse applique, and applique to create another two-headed chicken reminiscent of the brilliantly vivid molas made on San Blas Island in Panama. Around the border of the seat cushion I used bright blue piping.
