This green and white nicho features the usual nativity figures - BUT, there are two mangers! And two baby Jesuses! What's a mother to do?
As I carry on my hunt through thrift shops for all-things-religious, I can of course NEVER pass up a nativity scene, no matter what size or color. My best find? I have a brightly painted, foot-high plaster set in my dining room - purchased from a street vendor at the border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego. Many more kings, shepherds, sheep, donkeys, angels, parents, and babies await inspiration on the shelves of my studio.
So when I found this simple white grouping, I was delighted. Then, when my daughter happened upon another baby-in-a-manger that was identical to Jesus #1, Holy Multiple Births, Batman! That was too good to pass up. I remembered aggravating a Sunday School teacher many years ago when I asked why there had been just one only begotten son...why not more? why no sisters? - since most families I knew had three or four kids, for goodness sake! My friends and I all felt sorry for Only Children because we assumed they must be forever lonely.
So I bought the set and the bonus baby and set them up in an uncharacteristically simple green box. Now neither Jesus will have trouble finding someone to practice throwing spirals with when he matures.
