This nicho combines religious expression and whimsy with its assembled bugs gathered attentively around Jesus, listening to and joyfully celebrating with the Lord of all creatures great and small.
When I encounter a tragic Jesus on the cross at my local thrift shop, I try to make lemonade. I have discovered that many crucifixes can be disassembled, at which point the cross goes in one storage bin in my studio and Jesus goes in another. That was the case with this lovely metal figure of the Lord. His former cross is stowed away, waiting for me to need it. Rather than dwell on His execution, I chose to see His outstretched arms as a call to join in a joyous dance.
I've been casually collecting plastic insects that crossed my path for a while and had a few...but this summer, my friend-of-45-years Dawn gave me a whole bunch of HUGE, very colorful, very realistic bugs that she had used for a lesson in her kindergarten classroom but no longer needed. I already had a bag of flies and random other small wiggly critters, but her magnificent beetles and butterflies added great zest to the overall design I was working on.
Plastic flies and their wings are used to create a border on this primer-gray creation which currently hangs in my lemon-yellow hallway where its colors compliment the walls.
