My mother loved antiques. I grew up surrounded by them, including several sweet little cane-seat chairs she believed to be from around the time of the Civil War. When I inherited these, I asked a carpenter friend about them. He believed they dated from the late 19th century. Either way, they're antiques now!
Over the years, I have found several more such chairs that are dead ringers for my mom's. This is one of them. The chair itself is simple - and I left it that way, although I had to replace the broken-out cane seat with sturdy plywood stained to match the chair's finish.
The seat cushion, on the other hand, is anything but simple. I combined denim, bright yellow rodeo cloth, snippets of Guatemalan fabric and belting, my own hand-embroidery and reverse applique, and royal blue piping to create a vibrant, wacky two-headed chicken. Just try being anything but happy in this chair's vicinity.
